Strong Alpine glacier melt in the 1940s due to enhanced solar radiation

چکیده
[1] A 94-year time series of annual glacier melt at four high elevation sites in the European Alps is used to investigate the effect of global dimming and brightening of solar radiation on glacier mass balance. Snow and ice melt was stronger in the 1940s than in recent years, in spite of significantly higher air temperatures in the present decade. An inner Alpine radiation record shows that in the 1940s global shortwave radiation over the summer months was 8% above the long-term average and significantly higher than today, favoring rapid glacier mass loss. Dimming of solar radiation from the 1950s until the 1980s is in line with reduced melt rates and advancing glaciers. Citation: Huss, M., M. Funk, and A. Distributed hydrological modelling of a heavily glaciated Alpine river basin
A glacier submodel was successfully integrated into the distributed hydrological model WaSiM-ETH to simulate the discharge of a heavily glaciated drainage basin. The glacier submodel comprises a distributed temperature index model including solar radiation to simulate the melt rate of glaciated areas. Meltwater and rainfall are transformed into glacier discharge by using a linear reservoir appr...
متن کاملClimatic warming, glacier recession and runoff from Alpine basins after the Little Ice Age maximum
Records of discharge of rivers draining Alpine basins with between 0 and 70% ice cover, in the upper Aare and Rhône catchments, Switzerland, for the period 1894–2006 have been examined together with climatic data for 1866–2006, with a view to assessing the effects on runoff from glacierized basins of climatic warming coupled with glacier recession following the Little Ice Age maximum. Annual ru...
متن کاملDistributed Mapping of Snow and Glaciers for Improved Runoff Modelling
Runoff in glacierized alpine basins results from the seasonal snow cover and from the glacier melt. Due to high resolution satellite sensors, it is possible to map snow cover and glacier areas in the basin of Massa-Blatten, 196 km2, 1447 4191 m a.s.l. Depletion curves of snow covered areas were derived in six elevation zones. In addition, the date was determined when the glacierice became expos...
متن کاملDistributed mapping of snow and glaciers for improved runo modelling
Runo in glacierized alpine basins results from both seasonal snow cover and glacier melt. In this paper we present a case study for an improved runo modelling of the basin Massa-Blatten, 196 km, 1447±4191 m a.s.l. Using high resolution satellite sensors, it is possible to separately map snow cover and glacier areas. From the satellite data we derive depletion curves of snow covered areas in s...
متن کاملPrecision snow cover and glacier mapping for runoff modelling in a high alpine basin
The runoff regime of high alpine basins will be affected in response to global warming not only by the seasonal snow cover but also by glaciers. Runoff peaks due to snowmelt will partially be shifted from the summer to the winter. The glacier melt will supply a higher amount of meltwater until glaciers finally disappear, if the temperature keeps rising. In order to evaluate quantitatively this ...
